Sharing Stories

During the 150th celebrations customers and current and former staff were encouraged to share their memories of the library.

People were encouraged to

  • Visit the 150th blog and share your experience or comment on other contributions.
  • Visit our flickr photostream. Tag and comment on our extensive collection of images – see if you recognise some of those faces, places and librarian smocks!
  • Share your collections. Have you got memorabilia (photos, cards, books, bookmarks, stamps etc) that you would like to share that could be part of a display in your local library? We’d love to hear from you. You can contact us at

From this came such things as the Shelved Memories exhibition at Our City Otautahi. From old catalogue drawers, library smocks and story-time puppets to World War II rationing cards and a selection of 1981 Springbok Tour protest posters, this exhibition provided rich insight into the city's library and the community it serves.

Library Travels with My Father is a lovely reminiscence from Julianne Pask about the importance of the library in her life.

Mollie Tobeck talks about her long and enthusiastic career as a library customer.
