    Eight squadron doing the gas firing that 1st had yesterday but Im not going out for another lot today as theres nothing very pleasant about it
    Had a ride round the other squadrons to give the horse I have some extra work. He is supposed to be an outlaw & is very [flash?], but will do me for a mount. I had to leave Nancy in the CYC
    Several taubes came over [late?] in afternoon but didn't bomb as guns kept them high up
    1917 October 4 Thurs
    Main Body men are parading before the General today to see when they are going on leave to N.Z.
    Four taubes came over today & we expected to be bombed but our ant-air-craft guns kept them to high up
    The main Body men & NCOs have returned from their parade their leave to N.Z is off for sometime so they are very disappointed [sic] & have called General [Chote?] some ugly names

  • Collection Description World War I diary kept by Edward Herbert Aubrey (1891-1963) from May 1917 to November 1917, with brief notes from 1918 and 1919. Some pages were removed and sent to relatives.
  • Parent Collection Description Edward Aubrey served from 10 February 1916 to 19 February 1919. He embarked on the Waihora in December 1916 with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 19th Reinforcements, New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade. Aubrey served in Egypt; and after being wounded on 5 November 1917 part of his left leg was amputated. Edward Aubrey spent his remaining service in medical care in Egypt and then Britain. On his return to New Zealand he returned to farming in the Omarama area on land won in a ballot as part of a Returned Soldiers' initiative.
