Reveille at 5-30 am.
A fearful day for dust so thick you couldn't see just like a heavy fog only 100 times more disagreeable. Taubes did not come over last night, but were over early this morning. Our anti-air-craft guns kept them up very high & they didn't bomb
Tucker rotten today as we are using up our iron rations this takes place about once a month
1917 October 2 Tues
Did some shooting today with gas helmets on & in a gas cloud not too much gas though mostly smoke bomb.
I transferred today from 1st squadron to 8th squadron. They are more Otago & Sth Canterbury men in here than in any other squdn & Id sooner be in with men from my own part of the country.
Shifted my gear over in the afternoon & am now set in a new troop with new /horse saddle & gear - Image 93 of 126
- Collection Description World War I diary kept by Edward Herbert Aubrey (1891-1963) from May 1917 to November 1917, with brief notes from 1918 and 1919. Some pages were removed and sent to relatives.
- Parent Collection Description Edward Aubrey served from 10 February 1916 to 19 February 1919. He embarked on the Waihora in December 1916 with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 19th Reinforcements, New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade. Aubrey served in Egypt; and after being wounded on 5 November 1917 part of his left leg was amputated. Edward Aubrey spent his remaining service in medical care in Egypt and then Britain. On his return to New Zealand he returned to farming in the Omarama area on land won in a ballot as part of a Returned Soldiers' initiative.
