    Reveille 5-30
    Packed up our gear today as we are shifting camp to Abba [San?], wells to go on duty for a week then see wells are kept clean & filled etc. Left the beach at 1 pm arrived at wells 6 pm
    Had a shower of rain through the night not enough to make us very wet. Only one troop on this job 28 men so we expect to be better than when with the regiment
    1917 September 18 Tues
    Reveille 5 this morning
    Took over water guard from Australians at 6 pm.
    6000 gallons per hour are pumped from the main pipes [at?] than Yunus. Pumps were kept going from 6 o'clock in morning until 12 midnight for the day one hundred & eight thousand gallons so some camels horses mules & men quench their thirst here each day.
    The dust today was dammable & so thick could not see anything but great dust clouds

  • Collection Description World War I diary kept by Edward Herbert Aubrey (1891-1963) from May 1917 to November 1917, with brief notes from 1918 and 1919. Some pages were removed and sent to relatives.
  • Parent Collection Description Edward Aubrey served from 10 February 1916 to 19 February 1919. He embarked on the Waihora in December 1916 with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 19th Reinforcements, New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade. Aubrey served in Egypt; and after being wounded on 5 November 1917 part of his left leg was amputated. Edward Aubrey spent his remaining service in medical care in Egypt and then Britain. On his return to New Zealand he returned to farming in the Omarama area on land won in a ballot as part of a Returned Soldiers' initiative.
