    Boxing Day we arrived in Colon. at 4 p.m. & pulled into the coaling plant at 6 p.m.
    Colon is supposed to be the fastest coaling station in the world has an electric plants that that cost 3 million pounds.
    We had two thousand tons of coal on at 10 p.m. & pulled out into the harbour that night. Several of our men missed that boat at Colon so had to go by train to Panama where they picked us up. All turned up

    but two. These will have to wait in America now for next New Zealand boat.
    The Panama Canal reaches about 50 miles from deep water on the Altantic side to deep water on Pacific side. Pacific entrance 221/2 miles east of Altantic entrance. Entering from this side a boat is lifted 85 feet by three locks & into the Gatun Lake which covers 164 square miles & is 85 ft above sea level

  • Collection Description World War I diary kept by Edward Herbert Aubrey (1891-1963) from May 1917 to November 1917, with brief notes from 1918 and 1919. Some pages were removed and sent to relatives.
  • Parent Collection Description Edward Aubrey served from 10 February 1916 to 19 February 1919. He embarked on the Waihora in December 1916 with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 19th Reinforcements, New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade. Aubrey served in Egypt; and after being wounded on 5 November 1917 part of his left leg was amputated. Edward Aubrey spent his remaining service in medical care in Egypt and then Britain. On his return to New Zealand he returned to farming in the Omarama area on land won in a ballot as part of a Returned Soldiers' initiative.
