    Reveille 5 am
    We are watering our horses very early again now & so having an early reveille & also early breakfast for the rest of the week.
    Four enemy planes came over our camp this morning but did not bomb us our anit-air-craft guns kept them high up in the air & also kept them going at a great speed.
    We had a very easy day in the camp, but was a very dusty afternoon
    1917 October 12 Fri
    Some of us were out on a field day. Left our camp at 5-30 am & returned 3 pm. The dust was very thick at times & we were attached to Australians who did a lot of galloping about & we returned to camp horses very tired
    A mail came in from N.Z today & I received 5 letters Latest written was July 2nd
    We had a brigade concert at night & wasn't up to much in fact it was a very poor affair

  • Collection Description World War I diary kept by Edward Herbert Aubrey (1891-1963) from May 1917 to November 1917, with brief notes from 1918 and 1919. Some pages were removed and sent to relatives.
  • Parent Collection Description Edward Aubrey served from 10 February 1916 to 19 February 1919. He embarked on the Waihora in December 1916 with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 19th Reinforcements, New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade. Aubrey served in Egypt; and after being wounded on 5 November 1917 part of his left leg was amputated. Edward Aubrey spent his remaining service in medical care in Egypt and then Britain. On his return to New Zealand he returned to farming in the Omarama area on land won in a ballot as part of a Returned Soldiers' initiative.
