    Reveille 6 am
    We are moving over to the regiment today so pulled down our bivvies in the morning & packed up a little ready for the shift. We are to be releived at 4 o'clock so as to get back to brigade for tea.
    Australians arrived at 4-30 late as usual & we got over to our own regiment again about six, but were in time for a bully beef stew. Went to be 9 pm jolly tired as we are lazy now-a-days
    1917 September 26 Wed
    Reveille 5 am
    to go & do some shooting
    I was on Quarter masters fatigue so missed the shooting.
    Leo Ryan a lieut. in Auckland Regiment came down to see me in afternoon was pleased to see him as first time we have met in Egypt. He has just recovered from Malaria was very ill
    A parcel mail came into camp today & I scored well this time three good parcels. One was a plum pudding which we had for tea [?best] duff Ive tasted in this land

  • Collection Description World War I diary kept by Edward Herbert Aubrey (1891-1963) from May 1917 to November 1917, with brief notes from 1918 and 1919. Some pages were removed and sent to relatives.
  • Parent Collection Description Edward Aubrey served from 10 February 1916 to 19 February 1919. He embarked on the Waihora in December 1916 with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 19th Reinforcements, New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade. Aubrey served in Egypt; and after being wounded on 5 November 1917 part of his left leg was amputated. Edward Aubrey spent his remaining service in medical care in Egypt and then Britain. On his return to New Zealand he returned to farming in the Omarama area on land won in a ballot as part of a Returned Soldiers' initiative.
