Reveille 5-30 this morning
Gas helmet parade before break-fast Exercised horses up the beach from 9 till 10-30. Paid today drew the large sum of 30/-
Went to a lecture in the evening on South African War by an Australian chaplain
The lecture was very interesting & the lecturer a very funny old chap. I met Jos Dunga[e]y there & we managed to get a cup of cocoa also from YMCA which was good.
1917 September 8 Sat
We had brigade sports today wrestling on horseback. Tug-of-war on horse back, & a few other events. on foot. No one seemed to take a great deal of interest in the sports this time & so they werent a very great success.
Canterbury 1st & 2nd in Tug-of-war "Nancy Lee" my mount that was wounded on July 19th returned from vetenary[sic] lines today her wound not thoroughly better yet. I am going to ride her again - Image 81 of 126
- Collection Description World War I diary kept by Edward Herbert Aubrey (1891-1963) from May 1917 to November 1917, with brief notes from 1918 and 1919. Some pages were removed and sent to relatives.
- Parent Collection Description Edward Aubrey served from 10 February 1916 to 19 February 1919. He embarked on the Waihora in December 1916 with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 19th Reinforcements, New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade. Aubrey served in Egypt; and after being wounded on 5 November 1917 part of his left leg was amputated. Edward Aubrey spent his remaining service in medical care in Egypt and then Britain. On his return to New Zealand he returned to farming in the Omarama area on land won in a ballot as part of a Returned Soldiers' initiative.
