    Left the trenches at 8-30 & saddled up for watering. We had an awful dusty trip down today & was also very hot. Jack Boag carried some boards with us and also a billy & cocoa so had a couple of very good cups of cocoa each. Also had a good wash in the Wadi. Returned to camp at 5 pm. Went into the re-doubt at 7 pm. Was out on a listening post in front of trenches
    1917 August 11 Sat
    Came off our post at day-light left re-doubt at 6 am are going to be relieved by Australian Light horse today Packed up & moved off for Tel-El-Fara at 10 am arriving there about mid-day. Another very hot day. Going out tonight to raid a Turkish outpost redoubt. All our men are wearing broad white bands round each arm & white patches on the back. Our brigade in support of the Camel corps. Raided trenches at 11-30 pm.

  • Collection Description World War I diary kept by Edward Herbert Aubrey (1891-1963) from May 1917 to November 1917, with brief notes from 1918 and 1919. Some pages were removed and sent to relatives.
  • Parent Collection Description Edward Aubrey served from 10 February 1916 to 19 February 1919. He embarked on the Waihora in December 1916 with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 19th Reinforcements, New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade. Aubrey served in Egypt; and after being wounded on 5 November 1917 part of his left leg was amputated. Edward Aubrey spent his remaining service in medical care in Egypt and then Britain. On his return to New Zealand he returned to farming in the Omarama area on land won in a ballot as part of a Returned Soldiers' initiative.
