No stand to arms
Revielle 5-30 am. Turks have taken up a position on hills near Calm & are shelling our railhead. All mtd regiments called out in a hurry today to attack the Turks & drive them out of their positions which we did after being shelled & bombed. One many killed in [Celb.R] & 8 or so wounded. We lost a good number of horses my mare a big wound in the shoulder a splinter from a bomb catching her. We returned to camp at 11 [p]m Out again
1917 July 20 Fri
at 12-30 so no time to sleep. We drove the Turks back on to their old line & we held the hill today that they were shelling us from yesterday. The casualties in our regiment yesterday were Major Bruce wounded Lieut Wilson killed lt Livingstone wounded Tpr Ferguson killed & about 12 men wounded. Our regiment returned to camp at 5 pm had our tea & fed horses saddled up again 6 pm went out on out-post we are very tired today has been a blazing hot day - Image 56 of 126
- Collection Description World War I diary kept by Edward Herbert Aubrey (1891-1963) from May 1917 to November 1917, with brief notes from 1918 and 1919. Some pages were removed and sent to relatives.
- Parent Collection Description Edward Aubrey served from 10 February 1916 to 19 February 1919. He embarked on the Waihora in December 1916 with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 19th Reinforcements, New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade. Aubrey served in Egypt; and after being wounded on 5 November 1917 part of his left leg was amputated. Edward Aubrey spent his remaining service in medical care in Egypt and then Britain. On his return to New Zealand he returned to farming in the Omarama area on land won in a ballot as part of a Returned Soldiers' initiative.
